Why Trump’s Press Secretary Lied So Openly About Something So Small
Donald Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, has made something abundantly clear with his press conference the day after Trump’s inauguration; Trump’s team will lie and won’t answer questions if they don’t want to, and we the people, will just have to put up with that. However, underneath the coating of this unprecedented and strange press conference, comes the realization of something far more sinister. One question we should all ask ourselves is this: why would Sean Spicer, the new press secretary, lie so obviously in front of the entire world on a matter of literally no importance?
So it starts with this small, tiny, little white lie. A little lie that already too many Trump supporters are willing to believe due to the growing acceptance of believing in conspiracy theories. But if his many supporters already believe such a small, insignificant lie, what next? I believe this is exactly Trump’s plan. A plan straight from the dictators’ handbook. Confuse lie with truth and eventually, you’ll find there’s little you can’t get away with. Imagine a repeat of the Iraq war, where the US invaded a country on faulty information, but instead of bothering with faulty information, next time just flat out lie. Little by little, inch by inch, this is surely how tyranny comes to power. Taking a quick look at more recent world history, one finds that these are the very first things an authoritarian government spews, or to put in the words of Garry Kasparov, “Record grain and steel production in the Soviet heartland again! Little lies build immunity to big ones.”
We all know the price paid by the Bush administration today over their “faulty” intelligence that led to the Iraq war, but this time, imagine it happened and that the Bush administration never admitted any faulty intelligence. Imagine they insisted they were right. Now imagine millions supporting Bush just because he says so, no evidence, but because he says so.
That’s the strange world we find ourselves in right now, but it most certainly is no accident. The plan to outright lie openly to the American public was simply a test. A test to calibrate their tactics when dealing with the speedbumps that are sure to come.
