Why The Muslim-ban Wouldn’t Have Protected Us Before And Why It’s A Dangerous Precedent
On Friday, January 27th, newly-elected maniac—and president—Donald J. Trump, passed an executive order banning travel from several Muslim-majority countries. These countries include Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. The purpose of this executive order is to stop people from immigrating to the US from these countries until, as president Trump put, “the total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”
Although there’s plenty claims of bigotry and racism being hurled at president Trump over this order—many of which I agree with—I’ll tackle this issue giving president Trump the extreme benefit of the doubt and assume he’s doing this because he wants to protect Americans. So, why is this order dangerous, absurd, and literally non-sensical?
Simply put, had this ban been set in place a decade ago, it wouldn’t have done anything. It wouldn’t have protected us against any terrorist threat. President Trump begins the order by mentioning 9/11, yet, the 9/11 hijackers were from Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, none of which are on the banned list. Just look at the most recent terrorist attack in Fort Lauderdale. Where was the shooter from? New Jersey. In fact, let’s take a look at the 5 most recent terror attacks in the US and see where the perpetrators are from.
The Last 5 Islamic Terrorists and Where They’re From
- Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooter
- From: New Jersey
- New York Pipe Bomber
- From: Afghanistan
- Orlando Night Club Shooter
- From: New Hyde Park, New York
- San Bernardino Shooters
- From: Woman was from Pakistan, man was American
- Chattanooga Suicide Attacker
- From: Kuwait
So, out of the most recent and notable Islamic (ISIS or simply for the caliphate) attacks on US soil, president Trump’s ban would have affected none of them. I mean, you could go further back to the Boston bombers and still not find anyone who would have been affected by the countries proposed by Trump. Even 9/11 wouldn’t have been affected by this Muslim-ban.
How many of immigrants from president Trump’s list have been involoved in fatal attacks? None, not one. Of all the terror attacks that have happened in the last decade, and there’s many of them, not one of them were from immigrants from Trump’s proposed countries we ban them from.
Aside from the pointlessness of the ban, all Trump is doing, is making more enemies where they needn’t any. It almost seems he is starting trouble, just so he can be seen as the strong man to then quell them with more extreme measures. Also, another important precedent that this Muslim-ban can impose, is antithetical to our very American beliefs of being the humanitarian, “shining city on the hill.” However, as a prior-service member myself, I can tell you that many of those interpreters under visa to the US, many, many of them fought along our sides, many died with us.
Although Mike Pence has backtracked since riding Trump’s coat tails, just look at his tweet from 2015 about Trump’s (at the time proposed) Muslim-ban…
Calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional.
